Becky wants to travel around Europe; Jesse wants to serve his country by joining the army; but what does Denny want? Denny had always had a hard time communicating and forming connections with girls. His connection with Becky, despite being differently abled, is a welcome relief. His brother Willie is also a unique character who is constantly afraid of the things that are happening in the world, such as the talks about the possibility of a nuclear war and Mr. Ashwood even building a bomb shelter. Both Willie and Denny were raised by their grandfather since the sudden demise of their parents. Lucy is Willie's friend, and she is also facing her own unique challenges as she grows up.
