Gloria lived with Miss Libby, the owner of Miss Libby's Lodge, a children's home for abandoned, unwanted, or orphaned children. She was the kindest and most loving person in the world. Gloria's face was unusual; her one side drooped lower than the other. It was Gloria's sixth birthday and she learned the harsh truth about herself. Her mom had died on her birthday. The doctor saved Gloria but was unable to save her mother. Gloria was sad and felt she should have died that day. She was sobbing, burying her head in her pillow, when the unicorn snow globe on the shelf started playing. She rolled over and looked at it and wondered if she could ride on its back and go to a faraway land. She slept with that happy thought.

Gloria and the Unicorn (The Unicorn Series Volume I) by Wanda Luthman is a fantastical journey of Gloria and Sir Louie, the unicorn, and takes the readers on a wonderful and magical adventure. The story is also about friendship, love, self-acceptance, eliminating fear and sadness, and self-belief. The book will give confidence to all children out there with disabilities and deformities and teach them the power of love over fear in an enchanting and beautiful way. The story is uplifting for young readers and will make them work towards discovering the magic within them. I like the author's approach to a sensitive topic and it is heartwarming to note Gloria finally experiencing the magic of love, the only emotion that can beat sadness and fear. I cannot wait to read Volume II and I am sure readers will agree with me!
