Golly-Oodle-Lolly! One Fine Day with a Rascally Pup by Tammy H Kersey shows that “Words can be fun./ You can make them up too!/ Start with just one./ See what you can do.” Have you ever made up words? I know I have. Nothing quite like “Golly-Oodle-Lolly,” but I’m sure I’ve used words like “clickety-clack” and “Persnickety Jack.” It’s fun to make up words, even if you’re the only one to know the meaning. Dickens is a pup, but he’s growing up fast and he’s learning, the fun way, the many possible meanings of so many made-up words. Dickens is learning different commands, like sit, stay, and down, but he’s also learning that there can be creatively expressive ways to use the English language. Even though he doesn’t speak English (no dog does), he understands a lot of it and these fun words just jive with his exuberant personality – they’re much more fun than the mundane sit, stay, and down.

Tammy H. Kersey’s picture book, Golly-Oodle-Lolly! is the second in the Rascally Pup Learns and Grows series. The book is pure fun. With bright, colorful illustrations and an expressive vocabulary interspersed with ingenious made-up words, this book will spark a few laughs and will encourage young readers to enjoy the English language. Learning to read with this book can be the difference between humdrum and humdinger, wouldn’t you agree? The title is a bit of a tongue twister and the author dedicates a page at the beginning to provide a made-up definition (complete with phonetics) for each word in the title: “Golly “A word to express surprise; Oodle, a lot; and Lolly, British for a sweet, or piece of hard candy. Put together and gollyoodlelolly means what a sweet, tons of fun surprise,” or, its second meaning (the one I like best): “just wow!” Actually, the whole book is “just wow!” Loved it!
