There’s nothing prettier than a colorful rainbow after a storm. But when a wicked witch flies into the rainbow and breaks her nose, her anger takes away the beauty, one color at a time. Sabrina doesn’t want to lose all the colors. She has a plan. Well, she believes she does. One plan after another fails, until she comes up with the ultimate plan, one that requires her to face her biggest fear: darkness, a color engulfed in black (if one believes that black is actually a color).

Victor Dias de Oliveira Santos’s picture book story, Goodbye, Colors!, is a fun story that teaches young readers about colors, how to read the word for each color, and about facing one’s fears. The plot leads the reader through Sabrina’s confrontation with the witch and her many creative attempts to stop the witch from erasing all the colors. The young reader will soon be cheering Sabrina on as she tries everything from slingshots to stealing the witch’s hat and revealing the witch’s well-kept secret. The battle, however, continues as one color after another disappears. The language is simple and each color word is written in bold, in the color it identifies. The illustrations are bright and, yes, colorful, and certainly help move the story along. As well as learning the colors and facing her fears, Sabrina learns how important it is to enjoy and appreciate the moment as we never know what might happen next. This is a charming story, full of adventure and educational value.
