Grant Me Justice: A Mother’s Journey from Murder and Mourning to Mercy and Dancing by Felecia Marshall offers a heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting account of one mother’s epic quest to achieve justice for the senseless and violent murder of her daughter who was specifically targeted and shot with an AK-47 assault rifle by someone who professed to be her friend. Through various cycles of denial, rage, despair, and hope, readers will understand the triumphs and tribulations of a mother’s journey based on a passion and dedication so strong that they led to the formation of a foundation for all parents seeking justice for children’s lives lost to violence and, subsequently, a lifelong mission for the author. Marshall’s quest begins in agony and ends in faith and a sense of inner peace which, at the start of this true-life story, seemed an impossibility. After initially feeling abandoned by God, Marshall simply refuses to give up until she has both justice for her daughter’s senseless killing and the answers she needs from within and above to find peace. Through perseverance and deep, ongoing spiritual self-examination, Marshall becomes a role model for all who suffer and seek to make sense of a senseless world.

Grant Me Justice is, on its face, a tribute to a beloved child, but it is also a testament to a mother’s love and her unceasing quest for deliverance from crippling grief and badly shaken faith. When Felecia Marshall failed, after a three-year series of court proceedings, to achieve the justice she desired for her beloved daughter Lexi B, she began to find healing through outreach to other parents who had lost children to senseless violence, and her foundation Grant Me Justice: A Voice for the Victim was born. In her courageous journey, readers will find both inspiration and affirmation. Marshall’s narrative is rendered in a plain-spoken, conversational, and un-sensationalized style, the result being that readers will feel as if they are going through the events of the story in real time with the author. The effect is, in a word, shattering, which makes Marshall’s subsequent quest all the more transformative. Grant Me Justice has all the ingredients necessary to bring hope to and restore faith for a weary and anguished world.

In Grant Me Justice, a memoir by Felecia Marshall, on March 14, 2017, a terrible act of violence took Felecia's daughter, Lexi B, away from her and all those who loved her, changing her life forever. As a result of this tragedy and her personal experience with the devastating loss, Felecia developed a greater awareness of the many injustices that exist within the criminal justice system. Felecia's relationship with God grew stronger, and she was able to understand what justice and mercy meant. Felecia learned that only God can bring true justice as she had to confront the defendants and their families in public while she battled to pull her life back together. Three years after the tragedy, Felecia realized she had changed irrevocably and that justice was an issue of the heart and soul.

Grant Me Justice by Felecia Marshall is not only about justice but, in the end, about redemption, forgiveness, and hope. Through this memoir, I was able to feel a small amount of Felecia's anguish, pain, and suffering as she struggled to cope with the loss of her daughter. During this emotional roller coaster ride, there were intermittent smiles mixed in with tears. I became engrossed in this memoir from the first page and was unable to put it down. The author gave me insight into the workings of the legal system while also highlighting how it falls short of serving the needs of families. I could see the hand of God throughout this memoir, and, by God's grace, Felecia was able to come out stronger on the other side.

Grant Me Justice by Felecia Marshall is the story of a mother who has found her calling as she struggles to cope with the brutal murder of her daughter. She starts by detailing the horrific information that confirmed the death of her youngest child and continues with the hellish fallout from losing a loved one due to a violent crime. The author's story is undoubtedly interwoven with that of her murdered daughter, Lexi B. She talks about her childhood and an upbringing that included dysfunctional characters and a hostile environment that favored violence and abuse of both the people she cared for and herself. She was aware of the effects of intergenerational violence and trauma and she struggled to keep her children from going through its negative effects. She recounts how she brought up Lexi B. whose beauty, talent, and self-esteem were slowly washed away as she dealt with societal stereotypes that caused her so much emotional and psychological pain. The author shows how a murder and the impact of a highly disappointing and unjust legal system on both the victims and defendants made her realize what she needed to do. Felecia later forms a Christian-affiliated group as a tool to advocate against violence, create awareness, give direct support, and connect with victims and concerned parties. She not only seeks justice in the temporal world but also shares how divine justice is the ultimate real justice that is working for her good and that of others.

Felecia Marshall is a good storyteller. An uncomplicated style and words make her work relatable and authentic, not only because of the emotional component but because the author is writing from her own experience, in addition to the valuable information and content. She writes with clarity, and the events leading to her life-changing ordeal are well documented. Her writing is purposeful, because not only does she courageously delve into her feelings to try to restore the inner joy that a tragic event has cruelly dissipated, but she empathizes with both the murder victims and the perpetrators themselves. She shows how things can be rebuilt and overcome in the thick of the struggles, doubts, and hurdles after a personal tragedy. Themes of persistence, faith, justice, forgiveness, and wholeness are interspersed with biblical references. An inspiring story of hope and healing that’s badly needed amidst the desperation created by the epidemic of gun-related murders in the United States. Grant Me Justice is best for those who have been victims of heinous crimes, and for those who are concerned and want to know more about the aftereffects of a tragedy and a defective judicial system.

Felecia Marshall wrote Grant Me Justice: A Mother's Journey from Murder and Mourning to Mercy and Dancing to come to terms with the vicious murder of her daughter, Lexi B. However, for the reader to fully understand who Felecia Marshall is, we need to see how childhood events shaped her and influenced how she raised her children. The author takes us on a journey starting with her childhood, through the shock and trauma of Lexi B's murder, and the trials of the defendants. But what stood out for me is the author's belief that God will work this horrible tragedy for her good.

Besides sharing with us her horror and grief over Lexi B's murder, Grant Me Justice also touches on the topics of domestic abuse, gun violence, alternate sexual relationships, and the inadequacies of the American criminal justice system. The fact that nobody informed Felecia Marshall about the dates of the hearings and how the court hearings focused on plea bargains for the defendants created in the author the conviction that the victims and the pain of their families don't matter. Even though she stood up in all three hearings and passionately shared her grief, it made no difference to the court proceedings. Felecia only found some closure after the last trial but still felt that Lexi B did not receive justice. It led her to start Grant Me Justice to give the victims a voice and a chance to tell their stories. Only then can healing begin.

Grant Me Justice by Felecia Marshall is about the author’s journey into adulthood and motherhood and the intense experience of losing her baby girl in a violent shooting. The author details some of the most painful experiences in her life. She speaks of the domestic violence brought on by her father and several of her mother’s partners throughout her life. Felecia explains how she watched her mother being battered and bruised, and the debilitating feeling of fearing for her mother’s life. Later, Felecia would watch her daughter, Lexi-B, experience the same abuse and an untimely and brutal death at the hands of her partner. But amidst the horrors and ills in her family and community, she also highlights the joys they experienced, particularly in early childhood when they lived with her eccentric yet loving and hardworking grandma and grandpa.

Grant Me Justice by Felecia Marshall is an absorbing, candid, and genuine expression of a life filled with love and trials. Felecia’s honest account of her feelings toward her daughter’s sexual orientation and struggle with identity highlighted her authenticity as a writer and person, and this endeared her story to me. She did not try to portray an image of perfection, merely to express her unwavering love for her child. Felecia lays it all bare, sharing some of her and her family’s most profound and darkest experiences. In her doing so, I was able to develop a clear picture of her life and that of Lexi B. The author's honesty connected me to her story and held my attention throughout. Grant Me Justice is a beautiful tribute from a loving mother whose worst nightmare became a reality.
