In Gregorina's Hair by Milagros Wallace, we learn that Gregorina has a problem. Her hair is curly and thick and impossible to style. Her mother tries, but she doesn’t always have the time. Her siblings make fun of her and she’s easily angered by the way her hair makes her look and feel so different. She finally takes matters into her own hands and grows it even longer to style it in a way that makes her stand out positively. Then she feels good about herself and her hair and she realizes that it doesn’t matter if you are different because everyone’s different.

Milagros Wallace’s picture book, Gregorina’s Hair, is a sweet story about a little girl who is having more than just a bad hair day. Told in rhyming verse, the lyricism of this story will warm the hearts of all who read it. The language is simple so that young readers can easily follow along. Alynor Diaz’s illustrations are spectacular and add a clever dimension to the tale. The plot follows Gregorina as she faces the problem of her hair and learns how to accept it and deal with it. The story has a powerful message about differences, acceptance, inclusivity, and equity. Gregorina must learn to accept her unique differences just as her siblings and friends must learn to accept her as she is. It’s important for all people, of all ages, to feel good about themselves and how they appear to the world. We have to accept our differences as well as those of others. This is a relevant message in a lyrical tale. Well done.
