I thoroughly enjoyed Guardian: The Choice, Book One in the Magical Beasts series by Geoffrey Saign. Let me tell you why. I am an older person, but I enjoy reading books about teens and young adults. The most important feature of these novels for me is the voice. The best point of view is the first person. If the writer can convince me that I am reading something that happened to the person narrating this story, then I am in. Geoffrey Saign does this beautifully in Guardian: The Choice. I believed I was reading an account of true events that happened to Samantha, fantastic beasts and all. I cared about her and her family. I understood when she couldn’t solve problems as fast as she wanted to. She was young, she was inexperienced, but her heart was in the right place. Everything flowed naturally. Though she is young, she is chosen and her best way forward is to follow her heart.

Geoffrey Saign did an amazing job of creating and bringing all the aspects of this story together. The plot is perfect. I loved the characters. Everything was right for this genre and this age group. Sam’s voice rang true throughout. Magical beasts are nothing new in young adult fantasy but Geoffrey Saign added enough original features to make his story unique. The magic made sense, but it wasn’t enough to solve all problems. Sam and Jake had to use their heads and hearts too. Guardian: The Choice is a story I can recommend to young adults and older readers.
