Determined to get away from his abusive aunt and uncle, Takeshi enlists in the Imperial Japanese Army. Circumstances beyond his control cause him and his colleagues to end up on the recently captured island of Guam. Despite his loyalty to the emperor, he is uncomfortable with how his fellow Japanese maintain order on the island. Still, his concern rapidly turns to fear when he discovers there is something ancient on the island, picking off the Japanese soldiers one at a time. Will he find out how to avoid a similar fate, or will he become another casualty of the Taotaomo’na? Only time will tell in M.K. Aleja’s Guardians Of The Latte Stones.

M.K. Aleja taps into the rich history and culture of the Pacific island of Guam to create an elaborate mix of suspense, romance, and mystery in Guardians Of The Latte Stones. The characters have believable origin stories that the reader will have no difficulty identifying with, and their conversations are simple enough to follow. Aleja’s attention to detail is impressive, going so far as to include references to George Tweed as well as the harrowing experiences that the indigenous population of the island suffered at the hands of the invaders during the years spanning the Second World War. This creates an immersive story that tries to stay true to the facts despite being a work of fiction. There is a palpable degree of suspense and drama, especially as the plot approaches its conclusion and you wonder if Takeshi’s feelings for Elena are worth the elaborate risks he is taking. Historical fiction lovers will enjoy reading this novel.
