Kevin and Sandra Wilson’s home in Forrestwood is destroyed by flood. Since they are desperate to find a place to stay and start over again, Kevin’s mother-in-law referred the couple to a rental agent, Marge Crabtree, who offers them a cheap house for rent in Havenville. On their way to meet with Marge, a mysterious white-haired woman in a black dress appears in the middle of the road, almost causing the couple to have an accident. Disturbed but able to get to their destination, the couple, particularly Sandra, is concerned with the state of the house, especially with a strange blotch on the master bedroom’s wall. As they settle into their new home, the couple is unprepared to face eerie events that would change their lives.

Haven of Evil by Melvin Rivers has a classic mystery horror theme that would satisfy fans of the genre with its intriguing premise. Things went spiraling down rather quickly for the couple, and I sympathize with everything they went through. The plot has a rather swift pace and a nice twist – it would be best for me not to spoil the story for other readers. The characters have enough depth to evoke readers’ emotions, although they can be fleshed out some more. On the whole, Haven of Evil is quite a satisfying read. It would be great to experience this story visually (a TV film perhaps). I look forward to reading more of Melvin Rivers’ work, especially in this genre.
