Deeply moving and inspirational, He Hideth My Soul is the third book in the Orphans of the West series by Faith Blum, a tale of a young man’s journey to finding his purpose, his faith, and how his contact with workers at a mine he inherits in Colorado transforms him. Otis Miller’s dream of becoming a medical doctor comes through with an unexpected visit from his grandfather’s lawyer on his twenty-first birthday. He learns that he is heir to a valuable inheritance. After his medical studies from Jenner Medical School, he travels to Colorado to inspect the mines, but what he discovers is shocking when it comes to the working conditions, and he must change all of this. But does he have the courage? Can his trust in God be the solution to the problems that seem to overwhelm him?

We encounter a character with a deeply flawed humanity, an intelligent man who is passionate about helping others but who doesn’t know how to communicate his own feelings clearly. It is interesting to observe his inner torments. His journey to faith and surrender in God also comes through many challenges. I enjoyed the way the author depicts his contact with the poor people. The narrative opens with a curious letter, a letter from Otis to his future wife and one in which he pours out the depth of his passion to be a country doctor. The reader can feel his pain at not being able to attend medical school, but the inheritance comes in pretty quickly, and life changes for young Otis, or does it? He Hideth My Soul explores the inhumane conditions at the mine in Colorado in a poignant manner, allowing readers a glimpse of what poor laborers go through. Faith Blum has a great sense of character curve and Otis develops throughout the narrative in incredible ways. The book demonstrates exquisite prose, a seductive narrative voice, and themes that are as meaningful as our humanity.
