Heartbreaker by V. Romas Burton is an epic fantasy novel and the second book in the Heartmender series. Addie discovers that she possesses the gift to save Decim and unite the Twelve Magisters: the mysterious one spoken of in the old prophecies. But as she struggles to master her talents as the Bellata, she becomes increasingly aware of the danger posed by Ophidian. Addie can’t ignore the persistent voice in her head telling her that Ophidian will destroy the twelve lands. Can she be the savior her people badly need in a turbulent time, faced with the horror of imminent destruction?

A tale that is beautifully written, Heartbreaker features a protagonist that will win the hearts of readers. While she faces a dangerous foe, Addie struggles with self-confidence and self-doubt, wondering if she can accomplish the mission entrusted to her. It is interesting to see her reconnected with friends and navigating complex relationships in the story, and this is presented in a way that feels natural. Although she can't help being suspicious of those close to her and is wary of betrayal, these traits that are impeccably written into her character and exemplified in the internal dialogues. V. Romas Burton has an excellent gift for character and world-building, infusing both with realism and evoking images that are vividly displayed in the minds of readers. The conflict is tensely penned, and from page to page, the reader’s sympathy for the protagonist grows stronger. I enjoyed the way the characters are formed, including Addie, James, Silas, and Nana. V. Romas Burton builds a complex story that features a world with magic, a phenomenal conflict, and memorable characters. Heartbreaker was an enjoyable reading experience for me.
