Have you ever met a child who needed special accessories during the different phases of their life to help them continue to grow healthily? Shanae Skillern introduces the use of orthotic helmets in a way that children can understand in Helmet Head. A young boy has a baby brother who wears a helmet. Using his imagination, he thinks about other people he has heard of or seen in his life who also wear helmets. The author educates young readers about the corrective helmet process. The book helps children to understand the importance of helmets. With lots of creativity and colorful pictures, children learn a lesson about how to be inclusive. The entire family and friends can learn together and create an atmosphere of support.

As a parent, some subjects are not easy to explain, especially when it comes to why another child is different. It gets a bit trickier when your close relative is different. Shanae Skillern has written a beautiful story in Helmet Head that helps children understand the use of helmets for those who need extra support in their growth and development. Identifying the role a helmet plays in various professions is a brilliant way to highlight the significance of helmets and help young readers understand that wearing a helmet is nothing to fear. The author demonstrates the importance of helmets and helps build a stronger bond between the siblings through further understanding. I would recommend parents of children in preschool to third grade who enjoy picture books to pick up this book for their young readers.
