The Darling Brothers – James, Andrew, and Nathan – grew up in a middle-class Australian family. When James was nine years old, their parents became “saved” and the family started to attend church services several times a week. Their Uncle Alwyn, an arrogant, narcissistic man, became the pastor of the church and created confusion for the boys. The teachings of the church were not lived out by some of its leaders, causing each son to distance themselves from religious institutions. Each forged a different path during their adult years. James became an architect and got married. Andrew found success in a rock band. Nathan left the area and had no contact with his family for almost twenty-eight years. In Hidden in the Light, written by Ian Cameron Wood, a story of tragic events, including horrendous abuse and death, is told. How the three brothers dealt with life’s tragedies and finding love and peace is certainly compelling.

Although this is a novel, the book’s format is written in a memoir style, with each brother telling his own story. It also reveals each one’s perspective of their brothers – an intriguing, enlightening aspect. Another fascinating feature is how each one dealt with the hypocrisy of the church in which they grew up. Author Ian Cameron Wood has crafted a thought-provoking, inspirational novel in Hidden in the Light. This is a story that explores the effects of abuse and how redemption can be found.
