Hiraeth by Jordan Elizabeth sees Felicity reluctantly leave her home and a budding romance with her uncle’s apprentice Jack in Dolan City for the uncertainty of the New World. Soon after arrival at Minosh Port, the travelers are attacked by undead creatures. A native called Nightstar saves her from the “rotters” and takes her back to his village to teach the children. Felicity is beginning to develop feelings for Nightstar when she learns he kidnapped her to make her his wife. She demands Nightstar deliver her to the colonial settlement of Emperor City. Here Felicity is reunited with her mother and siblings, only to learn that her father has bartered her in marriage to the governor, Eustace Elliott. Is there any hope for the family with the rotters encroaching on the city walls?

Hiraeth by Jordan Elizabeth is the first in a young adult fantasy series. The volume was an interesting read on its own but did leave me with the desire to get the next installment. I liked Felicity who was brave and resourceful. She fought the rotters and survived against unfavorable odds. Her love for her siblings and loyalty to her mother was admirable. She was practical enough to accept marriage to Eustace, who seemed like a decent person. However, Felicity didn’t seem to be resolving her attachments to the other men, which made me curious. Would she end up in relationships with them all, or would heartbreaking decisions have to be made? Each male seemed like a decent person and potential hero in their own right. I can recommend this book to readers who enjoy romance, action, and pulpy stories about undead monsters.
