Hitler's Maladies and Their Impact on World War II: A Behavioral Neurologist's View by Dr. Tom Hutton is one of the most interesting books I have read about one of the world’s most notorious madmen. Adolf Hitler was a sick man – no matter how much he tried to deny or hide it. The author explores the limited written records that exist concerning Hitler’s health and examines actual footage to give his opinion on Hitler’s many maladies. From Parkinson’s disease, emotional trauma, cocaine addiction, and the more fanciful ideas thought up by the Soviets, Hutton sets out a timeline of Hitler’s early life to his eventual decline. A figure hated by almost all, this book gives us an in-depth look at what plagued Hitler, and how his addictions, stubbornness, and hatred brought about his demise.

As Dr. Tom Hutton states categorically, Hitler’s illnesses do not absolve him of his deeds and crimes, nor did having any of these afflictions turn him into a horrendous larger-than-life monster. This book is meant to explore the illnesses and disorders that led to Hitler’s downfall and the eventual capitulation of Germany in World War II. Hutton does a wonderful job of remaining unbiased and respectful of all the lives impacted and lost at the hands of one of the world’s greatest tyrants. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and how well the author explained medical terms and concepts for laymen such as myself. I’ve read a lot about World War II and Hitler, but even I was shocked by the sneaky actions of the Germans at the 1936 Olympics. Hitler's Maladies and Their Impact on World War II is full of interesting historical facts that will satisfy the curious mind and history fanatic.
