If you've ever wanted to travel around the world but didn’t know how to do it, then How to Become an Escape Artist, a Traveler’s Handbook, is definitely for you. This book teaches you not only what to keep in mind when you travel, but how to completely immerse yourself in the world and culture that you are visiting. You don’t want to simply go to a country and see all the ‘tourist traps’ that they have lined up on easily accessible streets. What this book teaches you is how to locate the road less traveled and how to be welcomed down it with open arms.

There is more than one way to travel and Jackie Chase has definitely found the more interesting one. It can be fun to be an American visiting Europe for the first time, but you’ll remain just an American and you’ll remain just a visitor. On the other hand, immersing yourself in the culture of Cambodia is something entirely different and not just because it’s a different country than Europe. There’s so much to see and do and experience around the world and I can’t wait to try all of it. This book is an inspiration to me to try and really ‘go it alone’ and make my way through all the countries I possibly can - not as a tourist in the four-star hotels, but as a ‘local’ living in a hut or sleeping on the ground. There’s so much more to learn that way, after all.

I started reading How To Become An Escape Artist: A Traveler’s Handbook by Jackie Chase, expecting a simple, common sense traveler’s guide with a few good, common sense ideas and some interesting but predictable chapters about exotic, interesting places, and ways to cut a few corners and save a little money while you have a great adventure and see the world. This book is so much more than that. I learned about traveling by simply doing it. Back when I started traveling, there was no internet to make things as easy and organized as they are now. When I did venture into foreign lands, I got by with a lot of help from the U.S. government. But if I were just starting to travel today and I wanted one book that would answer all my questions, then I would choose How To Become An Escape Artist. It is really THE traveler’s handbook in my opinion.

There is a lot of information in How To Become An Escape Artist, but Jackie Chase does a great job of organizing it. This is essential. I have seen too many books that have the information, but I can’t seem to find it. I like this book. I like that it is exactly what it says it is. I like its philosophy about traveling. I like that it is well researched and well written. But most of all, I like getting more than my money’s worth. If I were setting off for the first time on an exotic adventure, this is the book I would choose to read. If my children or someone else I love was about to attempt a big travel adventure, and I could only give them one book to read, this is the book I would give them. It is that good and some of the advice is good for a lifetime.
