What does it take to create a new invention like a flying carpet? Imagination! Reading How to Make a Flying Carpet (Alex, the Inventor Book 2) by Lois Wickstrom shows the various steps to inventing something. Alex is a young inventor who thinks outside the box. She does not worry that something cannot be done. People considered listening to music over airwaves impossible at one point in history. When I was young, people thought we would never be able to fly to the moon. What was thought impossible became a dream come true in 1969. Most people would see a broken refrigerator magnet as just that. Alex did not see a broken refrigerator magnet. Instead, she saw the basis of a new and exciting invention. At this book’s end are a few pages of scientific facts about magnets.

How does a compass work? Can magnets function as forces to move objects? In How to Make a Flying Carpet (Alex, the Inventor Book 2), Alex explores how magnets work. Lois Wickstrom has Alex explore how magnets work and the possible applications in which they can be used. Once Alex understands the principles of magnetism, she is ready to invent. She quickly builds many of her small inventions, but she wants to do more. What will be her ultimate invention? Lois keeps the reader’s attention as Alex explores possibilities. At the end of the story, Lois adds a few pages that explain why magnetism works and what makes a compass so reliable. Parents need to encourage their children to use their imagination to solve problems. They need to teach their children to think creatively. Read this book with your child, then ask lots of questions, gently guiding your child into discovery mode.
