Author Biography

Kathryn Dixon was born and raised in South Carolina, her ancestral home for over 250 years. She has lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Geneva, and beautifully bucolic Charlottesville, Virginia, although Charlotte, North Carolina, is currently home. Travel and all that goes with it—people watching, food tasting, museum visiting, and more—is a favorite pastime that she indulges in the company of her loving and generous British husband, soon to become an American citizen. An activity very close to her heart is volunteering as a puppy raiser for the Guide Dog Foundation. She and her husband are currently fostering Lily, a yellow lab. Writing, editing, creating, and designing books of many descriptions, especially books for children—books that she wishes she had available to read many years ago with her daughter—is a most fulfilling way to spend her days after an early retirement (well, after working thirty years!) from a financial career that took her around the world.

I Love Being a Girl! is a pictorial children’s book written by Kathryn Dixon. The first girl you meet is Emmaline, who introduces the book. It’s all about girls, and how much Emmaline and the other girls introduced in the book love being girls. Each page introduces a girl and has a full-color picture of her. Some girls are shown as they study, read books and learn. Some enjoy science and math and other subjects. Other girls are shown performing their favorite sports, like swimming and jumping rope. There’s also a collection of girls who have pets that they love and spend time with. Other pictures show girls with their brothers, fathers, mothers and grandmothers.

Kathryn Dixon’s pictorial children’s book, I Love Being a Girl!, celebrates girls with a marvelous color collection of photographs of girls seen doing what they love. I liked the way it defines 'girl-ness' without seeming to restrict or try to limit the options young girls have. It shows girls of all sizes, shapes and ethnic backgrounds, and they all share their experiences being girls with the reader. I Love Being a Girl! is a positive and uplifting book that may inspire young readers to expand their interests in new ways. The photography is outstanding, and it helps to make each girl’s story come alive. This would be a wonderful book for a mom, dad or anyone who knows a young girl to get for a present. It’s delightful and is guaranteed to get young imaginations working overtime. It’s highly recommended.
