Imogen’s Journey is a work of science fiction and fantasy aimed at young adults, written by author B Fleetwood. In a story forming the second book in the Chroma Trilogy, we return to our central heroine Imogen Reiner after she has made all the discoveries about her secret powers and her true life and origins during book one. Equipped with self-healing and the power to read Chroma – the language of other people’s auras – Imogen must set out on the arduous journey to free her father and sort-of friend Leo from the clutches of the unseen enemy who still knows her greater purpose more than she does. This time, however, her would-be kidnapper Araz claims to be on her side, and wants to help her if he can.

Full of intrigue, legends and strong interpersonal relationships, Imogen’s Journey is a well-written work which will appeal to fans of classic fantasy. It particularly reminded me of the work of Phillip Pullman, with its clear divisions of good and evil and well devised plot full of interesting and mysterious characters. I didn’t care for Leo much, but the plot between Imogen and Araz was really fun and would certainly appeal to the target audience. Overall, this is also a clean read with a little stylized fantasy violence, highly suitable for young adult readers from twelve upwards, and B Fleetwood’s prose will carry you through the plot without ever jarring or faltering. I’d certainly recommend Imogen’s Journey as a compelling tale of supernatural powers, secret institutions and mysterious discoveries.

Imogen had no idea what to expect when she was taken to Holis. She had known she was different from those of Earth, but it was only recently that she had come to learn just how different. She was from another planet, light years away, and had been brought here for her own protection. She was born a Penta-Crypt, a person who was perfectly balanced in all five lines in equal measure. It also meant she would be viewed as being the Sanctus Cryptus, a person prophesied to lead their race to full maturity. People had tried for a long time to create a being like her, but instead, a line was being phased out. The more she understands the more it appears someone doesn't want a Penta-Crypt to be born, and now that she is here, there are those who deem her to be a threat. They have worked hard to hide the truth, and her presence threatens to reveal everything.

I enjoyed how B Fleetwood inter-spaced each chapter with an excerpt from the Chronicles of Holis which help you, as a reader, understand more of the world, and as it is the original document, one concealed from all, you can see how mindset has been altered to slowly adapt to the people of the world. They are prevented from choosing aspects of their life, such as which Data Encounters to study to being allocated. Little by little things change and the people don't even see it. The main characters are interesting and strong, and whilst I did feel I missed out by not reading the first book, I could still enjoy the story for what it was. Imogen's Journey, Book 2 of the Chroma Trilogy, is an engaging read that will easily satisfy lovers of the genre, as well as tickle the imagination. The characters feel alive, each with their own complexities and agendas, some more secret than others. There are doubts, questions, secrets, adversity, and threats at every level, and learning who are the right people to trust is the difference between life, erasure, or termination.

Imogen's Journey is the second book in the Chroma Trilogy by B Fleetwood, a gripping blend of sci-fi and fantasy. Imogen Reiner is a unique girl with a set of unusual gifts. Apart from the fact that she absorbs information quickly, self-heals, and reads the secret aura of emotions, she also has five hidden marks on her body. She’s lived a secluded life, not knowing why, but now her trainer, Leo, and her father are abducted by the ruthless regime that is out to get her too. Sent to capture Imogen, Araz suddenly shows a change of heart and seems to have an affinity for her. Can he be for real? Imogen sets out on a journey to rescue her father and trainer, a journey fraught with danger and multiple challenges. Does she have the fight in her and can this journey provide answers to the questions that dominate her thoughts?

Fleetwood’s novel caught me by surprise, a book that is more satisfying than I had imagined. One of the strongest points of the narrative is the skill with which the author handles character. The protagonist is a sophisticated character and the reader will immediately be intrigued by her. There is a sense of mystery about her that rouses the reader’s curiosity — the fact that she doesn’t understand herself fully and that she is a person of great interest to the powerful and ruthless regime. The unveiling of her life, layer by layer, is interesting. Imogen's Journey is deftly plotted with twists and surprises that I never saw coming. It features great prose and a voice that keeps the reader engaged from one page to the next.
