In The Shadow Of The Kingmakers, written by Vahid Imani, is a historical fiction thriller audiobook that is best suited for a diverse audience of young adults and adults who enjoy historical fiction that takes place after World War 1. One conversation overheard by fourteen-year-old Ali forever changes the lives of his friend Rose Pearce, who also works at the English Consulate, and a British spy known as James Malcolm. Young Ali ignores Rose’s advice to simply stick to serving tea and gardening as his sense of duty forces him into an action that leads him, Rose, and James in a direction that none of them ever imagined.

In The Shadow of the Kingmakers by Vahid Imani is a very well-written and well-narrated audiobook with a cover image that grabbed my attention the moment I saw it. I liked how the author kept me on the edge of my seat as I listened, wondering what would happen next, yet never being able to predict what the author would throw at me next. I found myself thinking that British spy James Malcolm reminded me a lot of the Jack Bauer character in the 24 TV/book series with his ruthlessness. However, Ali quickly became my favorite character and it was his character that kept me entranced.

The narrator of this audiobook is John Fleming. Mr. Fleming is an accomplished voice actor who has narrated numerous audiobooks including The Dewey Webb Historical Mystery Series, The I.F. Zones, and Bitter Paradise. I personally found Mr. Fleming’s voice particularly well suited for this book with its characters of different ages and genders. Mr. Fleming’s ability to switch between different accents was fantastic and truly made this an awesome audiobook.
