In Too Deep is the story of two Kiwis called Piper and West, who were best friends and lovers in another life. But that was before Piper left their hometown to pursue her dream of being part of the National Dive Squad; her dream was really a penance for a tragedy from her past. Almost a decade later, Piper is back to help her brother who is also West’s best mate from financial ruin, but West is so over Piper he will only tolerate her presence to help his friend out of trouble. Tracey Alvarez does a really great job of showing the animosity along with the still burning desire between West and Piper.

The past between Piper and West is much more than simple high school sweethearts and Tracey Alvarez works it marvelously. She doesn’t pretend that what tore them apart was your basic teenage misunderstanding and it makes In Too Deep so much more than your typical romance. To top it all off is the Kiwi language, culture and scenery. It is there on every page, from the frankness of their speech to their way of life and it gives the story an air of authenticity that lets the reader get lost for hours. Throw in life in the small town of Oban where gossip spreads as fast as the wind and everyone but Piper and West can see what’s happening and you have a fun second chance romance that is filled with kooky characters like Glenna and salt of the earth characters like Bill. In Too Deep is just an all-round fun read!
