Independent Lenny is a children's book written and illustrated by Amora Correa. Lenny is a young bunny who is always with his mother, whether they are eating, she is washing him in the tub, or while she watches over him as he sleeps. When Lenny turns four, he receives his very own calendar with all the special dates marked. Lenny's mother marks a date that confuses him, but he quickly learns that it will be his first day of school. Scared and excited at the same time, Lenny worries about what will happen if he suddenly needs his mother. On his first school day, Lenny is excited to make many new friends. Mrs. May, Lenny's teacher, introduces the class to their special guest before Lenny goes on to play and learn many things in his school. At the end of the day, Lenny is so excited to see his mother and hugs her tight.

What a wonderful read! As a former teacher's aide, I know that a child's first day at school can be extremely scary. Being in a classroom filled with so many strangers, and without having a parent to guide them, can be overwhelming. But school is a wonderful place where the teacher helps children to learn new things every day, while the children in the class are all potential new friends to play with during recess. Lenny's mind was so busy during the day with learning that he did not have time to think about any insecurities he might have felt on his first day. The surprise at the end of the day, seeing his mother waiting for him, made him smile. It would be just one day in many, and with much to learn, he will have the next few years to make each day more wonderful than the previous one. Amora Correa's amazing tale, Independent Lenny, is top-shelf reading for all youngsters who are about to embark on their very first school year.
