Ink on a Page: A Collection of Short Stories is a work of fiction in the anthology, interpersonal drama, and emotive writing subgenres. The collection is best suited to the general adult reading audience as there are moderate references to adult content and some explicit language used. Penned by author Jamila Mikhail, the collection offers ten fantastic stories that vary in their setup, genre, and stylistic approach but all center on themes of connection, emotion, and figuring ourselves out as people. From speculative body-swap dramas to cross-cultural romance and brushes with disaster, the collection has something for everyone across different periods of history and places in the world.

Author Jamila Mikhail could not have offered readers a better showcase of her abilities than to create a collection like this. One of the things that struck me most about this anthology was the variety of styles that Mikhail adapts to her purpose, seamlessly transitioning to different narratives to bend a style to suit the atmosphere and emotional intention of her story. Of the ten stories, there’s so much variety that it feels like stepping into a different TV show for a quick episode every time you open a chapter, which makes for a varied and refreshing experience, but the consistency of talent and commitment to character development is always present. For me personally, ‘Renegades’ was a big favorite, as I loved the way it played with themes of identity and gender. Overall, Ink on a Page is a highly recommended read for fans of accomplished short-form fiction, and I can’t wait to see what else this promising author has in store.
