If Not, What Is? by Nadia Rassuli speaks out about the need in her youth to suppress her Kurdish identity to help her function in the country where she was born. With sarcastic comments and a healthy dose of humor, Rassuli details her upbringing by parents from war-torn backgrounds, her difficulties with her peers, and her struggle with societal expectations. Due to her heritage, Rassuli was overly concerned about her looks. Still, she motivates us, no matter our background, to work hard, enjoy our lives, and pay greater attention to developing a good personality.
Through her therapeutic writing style, Nadia Rassuli talks about her childhood as a “third-culture kid” with her family difficulties and search for acceptance. No one should have to live their lives feeling ostracized by community members, but Rassuli showed resiliency with her strong character and sharp tongue.
