Issues of the Heart by Snook is an idealist’s and realist’s work. It’s the inner thoughts of a person aware of life’s lessons, emotions and imperfections. It deals with sacrifices, forgiveness, anger, love, and confusion, in clearly written poems that deal with different experiences in a woman’s life. Her achievements are not only in education, work and family, but also in forgiveness. Often, poetry is used as an outlet, as a balm for wounds. In this book too, the author attempts to recall her hurts and challenges, and to show her courage and triumph over them. She also shows her stark appreciation for human bodies and describes the dreams and questions of a woman regarding an ideal man, and the double drama of trusting and being bold and recoiling in shyness or fear.

She also describes the harsh truth of rejected love, the tears and the firm process of moving on. The author appears to be committed to keeping her integrity intact, despite the ups and downs of relationships and competition with other women. For her, love is a matter of pride and it is a precious commodity which she believes should be shared with someone who appreciates it. She also shares spiritual strength and urges people not to live in a “fool’s paradise”, swayed by trends that have no deeper basis. The book finishes with beautiful poems of love that end in marriage which are simple and soulful. This is a book for those who appreciate candid and uplifting poetry since the author has done justice to both genres.
