Clear your schedule and grab a tissue; Susan Antony's It Happened on Thunder Road is tear-inducing and full of emotion. Emmy has just returned home to Moncks Corner from a summer with her dad in New Jersey, but everything has changed. It's bad enough her own home doesn't feel like home anymore now her mom has a boyfriend, but her best friend suddenly wants to destroy their friendship by confessing his romantic feelings for her. The biggest change, however, is the new boy in town, Charlie Fields, who has formed a greasy gang with the local outcasts. Emmy's head tells her to stay away from the troublemaking street racer, but she can't deny how strongly she feels pulled toward him. And one night on Thunder Road is sure to change Emmy's life even more.

Right from the start, I was pulled into Emmy's little town of Moncks Corner and I couldn't leave. It Happened on Thunder Road begins as a realistic coming-of-age tale, but a hint of darkness peeks through the seemingly innocent lives of the characters. With just a touch of the supernatural thrown into the mix, I found myself shocked at the twists and surprises that popped up along the bumpy road that always seems to shift the direction of Emmy's life. Susan Antony's writing is flawless, beautiful, and witty, and she effortlessly portrays the emotional complexities of teenagers, friendships, and family relationships. I was captivated by her words, and I look forward to reading more from her.
