Author Biography

One autumn Monday, Michelle Wang couldn’t find a book to read aloud to her Grade One class, so she wrote one! It Must Be Autumn is the first book in her award winning Seasons series. Be sure to check out It Must Be Winter and It Must Be Spring".

Michelle lives in Toronto, Canada with her husband, four children, and a couple of jokester squirrels outside her kitchen window. When not cheering on her favourite hometown sports teams or playing random songs every time she walks by a piano, Michelle can be found reading a book to avoid cleaning her very messy house. Michelle and her family are excellent leaf pile jumpers.

It Must Be Autumn: It Must Be Seasons by Michelle Wang poses the question “What happens when winter comes? Autumn leaves?” Funny, right? Well, perhaps not so much if you don’t enjoy winter. However, each season has its place in the cycle of life. Any practical family would know the signs and prepares for autumn and winter. What do you do to get ready? The practical, fun-loving family knows best. Even Grandmother knows that you have to “Shake them…and rake them…and take them…and make them.” What do you think they’re talking about? And make them into what?

Michelle Wang’s picture book, It Must Be Autumn, is one of a series. Colorfully and cleverly illustrated by Uliana Barabash, this story is full of life, adventure, and lots of learning tools. The language is simple and there are many short phrases repeated to help young readers build on their reading skills. I love the way the author has used bubbles to accentuate the individual phrases in this exercise. Every member of the family is involved: Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Grandmother, and Grandfather. This helps build young readers' understanding of a traditional family unit, a loving family that works and plays well together. As a bonus, each new character is accompanied by some tree-ly seasonal puns to add some spice and chuckles to the storytelling. This is a great interactive tool for teaching young readers about the seasons, enhancing their reading vocabulary, and having a little fun and a few laughs along the way. Beautifully told and illustrated.
