Just After Midnight by David Cameron is a young adult adventure story with a difference. Dominic has always seen shadowy figures but he never realized he was the only one. Now he thinks this is why he was sent to a distant school hidden on the moors, a school shrouded in mystery. Stanmoor House School is not what Dominic expected a school to be and it hides a chilling secret. The children are picked to go there and some are more special than others. What is Stanmoor House School hiding? What lies beneath it? And why is there an early warning military system there? Dominic can’t turn to the teachers for help when he and his friends get into trouble so who can they turn to? The moors are ancient and their history may hold clues to the answer.

Just After Midnight by David Cameron is set on the North Yorkshire Moors in 1970, an eerie place to be at the best of times. This story will draw you in from the first page, setting the scene for the rest. The characters are well-developed, real people you can relate to, and are likable, especially the main protagonist. It’s a YA mystery combined with horror and a bit of humor to lighten it up, not a story to be taken too seriously – although if you know the Yorkshire Moors well, you might start to wonder about what, if anything, is hidden beneath them! This story has plenty of action, and it twists and turns, building the suspense as you read. It will keep you guessing all the way through and the ending kind of hints that the story may not be done. Whether there is another or not, this is an excellent, engaging story that will keep you entertained for several hours.

Dominic Johnson is used to seeing shadows, but this time it is different. One shade moves away from the wall as if testing if it was safe. The shade touched his forehead, and Dominic was blinded by a bright light. Dominic stood in his pajamas on a dark street with a boy next to him. They ran away from a humanoid shape. Before Dominic returned home, the boy pressed a large coin into his hand. Dominic told his mother about the shadows. For the next few years, all sorts of tests were run on Dominic. The doctor suggested his parents take him to Stanmoor House School. Dominic’s parents leave him at the school with the promise that he can return home if he does not like it. Dominic is unaware that his life is about to change forever in Just After Midnight by David M. Cameron.

The plot in Just After Midnight by David M. Cameron is tricky and exciting. The story is fast-paced and there was loads of action. I was intrigued, and the suspense kept my attention from the first chapter. It was so exciting I could not wait to know what would happen next. The uncertainty in the story makes it very powerful. The many twists and turns just add to the excitement. I love the characters. They were authentic and unique and skillfully handled. All the children in the school had a special gift. David Cameron with his vivid imagination and writing skills put a complex story into words. He created an adventure that I could be a part of. I got the chills so many times toward the end of the book. The ending caught me totally off guard.
