Kate the Kitty and the Unlikely Friend by Kristine Hokstad-Myzyri is an important story for kids about navigating friendships. Kate and her best friend Billy are flying kites on a beautiful summer day. Suddenly Tiana appears and wants to play too. Tiana and Billy head off to the swings, and Kate is left to pout. She was enjoying her time with Billy doing something she loved and now she is forced to switch gears. The last time she played with Tiana on the swings, it got too rough for her. But Kate worries that Billy will have more fun playing with Tiana than with her. What will Kate do? Can Kate, Billy, and Tiana be friends?

Friendships are an integral part of a child's life. Just as kids need to learn to read and write, they also need to know how to interact with others. Kate the Kitty and the Unlikely Friend share one common challenge that kids often face. When someone new wants to play and you have had a bad experience with them, what do you do? Kristine Hokstad-Myzyri's character Kate models an empowering way to stand up for yourself while compromising with others. Preschool teachers and parents will appreciate having an age-appropriate story to share with children about the value of being a good friend. The illustrations by Daria Shamolina are charming. Each main character is distinctive with their large eyes and expressive faces. The colors are bright, cheery, and engaging. This story will enable children to establish quality friendships.
