"Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever" by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard is based on actual events. It is a dramatic retelling of a traumatic event in American history. This book is filled with facts that somehow escaped my American history classes. I found those facts fascinating. If my history teachers had used even a few of the details I found in this book, I would have paid much more attention in class.

By reading the title it is easy to know this book delves into the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The authors take the readers through the last two weeks of Lincoln’s life and the events leading up to the murder. They bring to life the characters surrounding the President. I had been taught to believe Mrs. Lincoln to be a mentally unstable person. However, after reading this book I see her in a much different light. I was also amazed to realize that Lincoln knew his assassination was a possibility and even likely and yet he took chances. He placed himself in situations where he was vulnerable. He even seemed to suspect that he would never return to the White House from the theater.

I came away with a renewed admiration for a President that placed his country first and lead that country through a period of inner turmoil, bloodshed and strife. I also came away wondering if his death was what restored this nation. Would the north and south have reunited if Lincoln had lived? Or did his death and the sorrow it brought reunite the land?

I found this book fascinating. It is well researched, organized, and flawlessly written. I highly recommend this book.
