L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39: The Best New SF and Fantasy of the Year which is another riveting collection of short stories. These incredible works are from a variety of authors that impress with their unique voices with three bonus stories that include one from L. Ron Hubbard. Enter a future where foxes are extinct in Kitsune by Devon Bohm, then see what happens when the Grim Reaper faces the reality of death in Death and the Taxman by David Hankins. The Children of Desolation by Spencer Sekulin shows how far Tumelo is willing to go to save his wife. These and several other stories will take you into stunning worlds of the future and space. Gorgeous illustrations from a variety of contributors are woven throughout, adding stunning visuals to the stories.

This collection of short stories features incredible tales that draw you into the imaginative worlds these writers have created. The stories range in timeline from a near future as seen in Kitsune to one much farther away such as in White Elephant by David K. Henrickson. The Unwilling Hero by L. Ron Hubbard isn’t a new voice but is a delightful treat for science fiction lovers as it was originally published as part of Hubbard’s Conquest of Space series. It is a classic example of science fiction and is in sharp contrast to modern voices.

Each of the illustrations is one of a kind by a variety of talented artists. The images range in style and originality. Knowlton’s artwork is an extraordinary portrayal of a woman with two foxes to represent the kitsune. It embodies a gentleness in the style that is beautiful and paired well with the short story. Each of the works matches the tone and style of the narrative such as Chris Arias’s use of lines and detail that coincides with elements of The Fall of Crodendra M, and Dao Vi’s breathtaking artwork has a huge statue as a focal point with a style that blends fantasy and science fiction. L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 is another epic collection with beautiful new voices, bonus stories, and remarkable artwork.
