Lady August by Becky Michaels is a Regency historical romance taking place in England. When August Summer finds out she’s the illegitimate daughter of a dying Earl and a rich heiress, her entire life is turned on its head, starting with being plucked from her position as a governess by the stoic but handsome solicitor, Samuel Brooks. Thrust into a social debut, August has to learn to navigate the upper-class ton rather quickly with the support of her witty, if scheming, dowager aunt. However, she’s caught the eye of an unexpected suitor, none other than her own solicitor. Schemes abound to relieve August of her inheritance, but will she be able to find love amidst it all? Or will the one true combatant for her hand fall short of commitment?

Not often a reader of Regency historical romance, what drew me to this novel was the unique cover image—not something I usually see on books of the genre. However, once I began to read, I was delightfully surprised and intrigued by the characters, especially the Dowager Duchess who I found to be a wonderful supporting character in this odd cast. Brooks was infuriating, as all good reluctant heroes should be at some point in this genre, and August was steadfast. It wasn’t hard to predict the ending, but it provided a comfortable conclusion to this sometimes-steamy novel. I would certainly recommend Lady August by Becky Michaels to fans of Regency historical romance and look forward to reading other novels by her in the future.
