Lead with Mercy: The Business Case for Compassion by Robert Goodson is an excellent book based on the importance of compassionate leadership in the workplace. I found the book insightful, well substantiated and interesting to read. Goodson expands the word mercy as an acronym which takes into account key aspects of leadership which are effective and inspiring; namely being merciful, responsible, humble and leading from the heart.

As a successful leader, Goodson himself leads by example and the book has an undercurrent of sincerity and practical wisdom which is inspiring to people at all levels in an organisation. To get the most out of the book, treat it as a workbook for stimulating regular journaling on this topic since there are apt questions at the end of each chapter. I found the questions very soul searching and transformative, and I think they are one of the greatest strengths of the book.

The book also has a theme of humility and persistence since Goodson thought it best to write this book anyway, despite imagining that it might be received as yet another book on the subject of ethical leadership. I'm glad he did, since I think every ethical leader has a unique story to tell and the more that is written on it, hopefully the more aware people will be. In particular, Goodson's stories from his military experiences are highly inspiring since they show that a strong leader is further strengthened by having a kind heart, clear vision and good integrity. I hope that readers will find this book a useful and transformative tool for improving their leadership approach.
