Lemons for Blessings, written by Carissa Lovvorn and illustrated by Joshua Wichterich, is a Christian children's picture book that employs the famed adage of turning lemons into lemonade in a more literal sense. Two young girls named the Sharing Sisters are well aware of the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their lives and wish to do something special for the front-line workers who selflessly carried on for the sake of us all. Their father helps them build a lemonade stand that they then bring to a local fairground to serve their fresh lemonade to the people who served the community. The book concludes with relevant scripture and the line, “There's a lesson to be learned about giving of yourself. We should never keep our gifts stored up on a shelf.”

Carissa Lovvorn has written a cute little story on an important premise in Lemons for Blessings. My youngest reader was fond of the lyrical, sing-song style of the narrative and from a technical poetic standpoint, it was pitch-perfect. The flow is lovely and the words glide along comfortably through each page. There was some momentary confusion on whether or not the Sharing Sisters were selling the lemonade to everyone, or if front-line workers themselves were gifted the lemonade in thanks. We agreed on the latter and continued 'singing' the story happily. The most incredible part of the book is unquestionably in its artwork. Joshua Wichterich is a master illustrator and we were all in utter awe of the gorgeous sketches that are complemented by a soft pastel palette inspired by watercolor. You know you have found a winner when a little girl's tiny fingers linger on the page and trace over some of the art. Very highly recommended.
