Life Between Moments: New York Stories is a work of fiction in the short story, literary, and slice of life subgenres. It is an anthology that contains twelve stories showcasing snapshots of everyday life in New York and its surroundings and was penned by author Phil Rosen for the adult reading audience. In this celebratory but also critically sharp work, Rosen takes great care to paint delicate portraits of New Yorkers going about their business, from fledgling musicians hoping to make it big through to relationships in peril and professions high and low that most of us would never dream of experiencing or exploring. In total, the stories build not just a picture of humanity, but the unique micro-society of New York City and its reflection of the wider world.

The text of this work is sparingly beautiful in a way that makes it feel more like poetry than prose, and it put me in mind of the storytelling style of Raymond Carver for its incisive portrayal of humanity with such fantastic brevity. Author Phil Rosen has crafted a book that can be enjoyed by even the busiest folk who have little time to read, an excellent meta-concept in itself for most of the busy New Yorkers whom the work is aimed at and no doubt inspired by. Readers beyond the city also gain a keen, socially conscious perspective of NYC life thanks to Rosen’s masterful conveyance of attitudes, dialogue, and culture. Overall, Life Between Moments: New York Stories is an unmissable read for short fiction fans everywhere.
