Little Bluebird is a children’s concept picture book written by Erin Murphy Welch and illustrated by Mykyta Harets. Emmi Bluebird is a little bluebird who was born with one short wing. Emmi loves to play and do things with the other young bluebirds and doesn’t think her wing detracts from her enjoyment of life, except that it does make it hard for her to fly as the other young birds do. She knows that on some days she’ll make more progress than on others, but she’s determined to keep on trying. One day, at school, she meets other young birds who are also different: one uses a walker, another needs oxygen to breathe, and one bird is blind and uses a cane. They are all different, but they are also all young ones working hard each day, and all are perfect, beautiful, and endowed with limitless potential.

Erin Murphy Welch’s Little Bluebird follows the life of Emmi, a young bluebird with one short wing who has a goal to be all she can be. Welch’s story will resonate with any young reader who feels different or at a disadvantage. This uplifting and inspirational story reminds kids that their dreams do matter and can be achieved even if it takes a little longer or needs more effort. Mykyta Harets’s images are colorful and full of whimsy, and each panel follows and works with the story brilliantly. Little Bluebird is highly recommended.
