Living On Miracles: Where is G-d When You Need Him? is a work of non-fiction in the memoir, faith, and spirituality subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Aura Shira Michel after some very harrowing experiences left her questioning her faith and the path her future life would take. The work takes us through the author’s experience of a major physical impairment and the journey of healing from a variety of perspectives, from physical to emotional and spiritual. At its core, this heartfelt autobiographical work examines how the author’s bond with her faith became even deeper after her worst experiences.

Readers who love to explore tales filled with triumph over adversity and the path back to hope and healing are sure to be inspired and fulfilled by author Aura Shira Michel’s heart-wrenching life story. Losing one’s eye is an unimaginable hardship that undoubtedly affected every facet of the author’s life, but her strength of character and the power she takes from her faith offer much for the rest of us to learn from. I was also fascinated to learn more about the ways in which Judaism differs from other faiths and how deeply and personally connected to her beliefs the author is, which in itself was emotive and motivating to explore. I also felt that the work was well organized to offer a good balance between the memoir and narrative aspects, which were deeply personal and resonant, juxtaposed with the discussions of faith and the miracles we can find every day if we’re open to them. Overall, Living On Miracles is a deeply-felt and significant work that memoir fans and spiritual readers will not want to miss.
