Author Biography

My zeal for exercise supporting brain health is the key theme of my recent children’s book publication, Llama Locomotion. As a psychologist, I regularly recommend exercise as a prescriptive practice to promote good brain health.
My lifestyle demonstrates my passion for exercise as supporting our brain health. I regularly run, do yoga, ski, sail, or golf, and teach patients I treat about the benefits of exercise on brain health. I was inspired by my exercise practice and best-selling authors and psychiatrists Dr. Ratey and Dr. Hagerman’s book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. Spark educates the public about the enormous benefits of exercise on the brain. I recognize that we who exercise know from experience that we feel better when we get our blood pumping. Yet, in the pages of Spark, we can all learn that exercise balances the neurotransmitters and neurochemicals in our brains. Wouldn’t it be great to spread the word that exercise positively impacts the anatomy and functioning of our brain?”
I often experience creative ideas when exercising. On an early morning run, as I felt my feet move rhythmically and my arms swing evenly, Llama Locomotion was conceived. In cadence with my run, I wrote, “Llama Locomotion is a good brain potion,” I am passionate about my desire to educate children about the enormous value of exercise on the brain. Combining passion, exercise, and creativity gave birth to Llama Locomotion.

Llama Locomotion by Dr. Deborah Sharp Molchan is a story about how physical exercise can help you focus and learn better. This book suggests that exercise is directly linked to better brain function and that by moving around you allow oxygen to enter the brain, improving focus and the ability to study. The story follows our llama friend experiencing many adventures, and with the help of her physical fitness, she can do all kinds of things. Her mother is a strong believer in movement, helping her to process things better, and overcome all kinds of challenges. This is a great book for parents to teach children about the importance of physical exercise and why our bodies need it.

Llama Locomotion by Dr. Deborah Sharp Molchan is a really sweet story. It teaches children the value of moving around and reminds parents that children need physical activity to help stimulate them. There is even a helpful guide at the end for teachers and caregivers about the importance of physical exercise and how much children need it. The charming images by Emily Hercock give us a sneak peek into the llama world. We see all the different activities and joy they experience, from physical exercise to making friends. The illustrations put you right into their world and submerge you in their adventures. Parents should teach their children the benefits of physical activity and how important it is to be physically active. This is a book that people from each generation will love.
