What would you do if your very special grandfather went missing? Could you find him? This is the dilemma presented to Logan and his partner, Emily. They’re great sleuths, with an uncanny ability to find things – and people. They’re part of a secret task force, called the Finders. But it gets rather close to home when Logan and Emily are called upon to find Logan’s missing grandfather, PJ. According to his grandmother, PJ had left as usual that morning for his chess game in the park but never showed up. Can Logan put aside personal feelings and concerns and find his grandfather? And, will he discover why his grandfather didn’t show up at the chess game? Perhaps he won’t like what he discovers.

D.C. Spaar’s middle-grade novel, Logan & Emily Files: PJ’s Perplexing Predicament, is another installment in the Logan and Emily mystery series. The author engages young readers right from the beginning, sharing just enough background to allow readers who haven’t read the previous book to be able to follow along with ease. There are some sketches to help move the story along. I particularly love the opening line: “Logan Scott is his name and finding things is his game!” This certainly defines the main character, as well as allows young readers to relate to Logan and his unique abilities, something youngsters need to find within themselves. The plot moves at a fast pace, with enough dialogue and descriptive narrative to set the stage and develop the characters. Another great mystery read for young readers.

Logan and Emily Files: P.J’s Perplexing Predicament is a children’s book written by D. C. Spaar and with illustrations by Ishan Vidyarathna. Logan is a member of a secret task force called the “Finders”. Though he may be young, Logan Scott always solves his cases. He works alongside fellow agents of the secret department and his neighbor Emily, a recent recruit, that assists him with his cases. Logan’s latest case though might be his hardest yet, as he has to locate his missing grandfather, known as PJ. PJ is a punctual man, so when he didn’t show up for his morning game of chess at the park, everyone assumed the worst. Logan and Emily will have to use all the skills and tools in their arsenal to solve this case, and the mystery behind his grandfather’s disappearance will forever change Logan’s life.

Logan and Emily Files: P.J’s Perplexing Predicament had a pretty good plot. It was interesting and had plenty of surprises in store for me. That helped keep it fresh and captivating during my time with this great book. The characters were also well-written, and each was unique and memorable. The banter between the characters was really funny and would always make me laugh. The illustrations by Ishan Vidyarathna were another huge positive for me as they were detailed and bursting with vivid colors. I loved how the illustrations conveyed the emotions of the various scenes. Overall, this was a good read, and D. C. Spaar’s efforts are greatly appreciated. To conclude, I’d recommend this book to parents that wish to educate their young children about mental disabilities that occur due to old age.
