The Immortal Empire series by Kate Locke is such an imaginative series! Xandra Varden, half goblin queen, thought that her troubles would be over once she accepted the Goblin Throne, and suddenly had the most vicious army in the known world at her beck and call. Not so much...because even though the Goblins are a formidable force, they are being courted left and right because everyone wants the power of the goblins behind them: the aristocrat vampires, the werewolves, and the humans. This political toadying and distraction isn't even the worst of Xandra's problems either. The aristocrats have been experimenting again, and in the worst kind of way. Now, a teenage killing machine is on the loose and Xandra's got to stop her, while preventing a civil war from tearing the country apart.

The world building in this series is intricate and wonderful, with an equal blend of historical fiction, and paranormal fantasy genres with just a hint of steampunk thrown in for good measure. This is a truly great example of genre blending that works on just about every level. This was my first audio book from Kate Locke and I thought that the writing was even better expressed through an audio version. You really get a kind of characterization and voice that sometimes escapes you when you are reading a print version. Fans of adventures, sassy punk heroines, and fascinating mysteries should strap on two seat belts and settle in for the ride of a lifetime when opening up Long Live the Queen!
