Niya Hicken's Look at Me! is a creative children's story about the power of the imagination and the importance of encouraging child exploration. Look at Me! also expresses the importance of fostering the belief that children can be anything they want to be. Look at Me! takes us on a journey with a mother and son as he imagines himself as a superhero, space explorer, builder, and much more. As he imagines different occupations, his mother is always there to cheer him on and believe in him. He even imagines himself being an adult graduating and making his mother proud of his accomplishments. Look at Me! is a lovely story for children.
Niya Hicken's Look at Me! is a good example of children's potential for creativity, imagination, ingenuity, and the importance of believing in yourself to accomplish any goal. Niya's writing brings positivity into a world where things can be very negative. The vibrant illustrations of the son doing various tasks and jobs were beautiful and added to the impact of the story. Niya mentions her children at the beginning of the story as being her inspiration for her writing. It is very apparent that her children's imaginations took them on many journeys and that she was encouraging, nurturing, and was very proud of them. Niya Hicken's Look at Me! is a great addition to children's literature with a powerful message of encouraging children and letting them know that they can accomplish anything if they believe in it.
