Lose Weight? Exercise More? I Don’t Think So! by Kristen Carter could well be the refrain from all of us when faced with the doctor’s inevitable advice. The purpose of this book is to demystify that famous advice from doctors the world over – “you need to make changes to your lifestyle, for your health.” As the author points out, doctors rarely have the time or indeed the inclination to explain exactly what we need to do to make these changes and, more importantly, what we need to do to make said changes stick and be permanent. This is not a “how to lose weight” or “how to exercise book.” What Carter attempts to do in this short treatise is to explain firstly the rationale behind the doctor’s instructions to lose weight and exercise more and secondly some concrete steps in changing our mindsets so that we take steps to not only achieve the stated goal but more importantly achieve permanent changes in our lifestyle and ultimately our health.

Kristen Carter offers a roadmap to permanent change in Lose Weight? Exercise More? I Don’t Think So! What I particularly liked was her explanations as to why fad diets and forced exercise rarely, if ever, work. The author, by focusing on our habits, has brilliantly pinpointed the only true way to ensure these objectives are met. Of special importance, for me, was the explanation that unlike what many of us have been told in the past, ingrained habits relating to food and exercise are not habits that can be changed in just a few weeks but often will require work for up to a year to fully reinforce the new habits. This is a technical book to some extent but written in a language that is understandable and actionable by the general layperson and that’s what makes it stand out from the rest. I really enjoyed the sage advice that we cannot expect to change things overnight and that one small step each day, changing one small habit, was absolutely the way to go. The section on exercise, especially for those of us who are “exercise averse,” was extremely enlightening and made doing the recommendations easy and sensible. If you are serious about making changes in your lifestyle to make a long-term difference in your life from a health perspective, this would be an excellent book to begin the journey with.

Lose Weight? Exercise More? I Don't Think So! What to do when your doctor tells you to make changes for your health by Kristen Carter is a motivational book that helps you with your goals to lose weight and/or exercise more. She does not give advice but gives you reasons why you should. Kristen Carter shows you why you should change as well as how changing just a little at a time works. She uses charts and explains certain health issues to back up her advice. She also gives you questions that you should ask yourself to help you understand more about what you need and why you need it. She explains how just changing those two things will change your life for the better.

I thought that Lose Weight? Exercise More? I Don't Think So! by Kristen Carter was a refreshing way to discuss health issues. I loved that she gave us questions to fill out to help us decide. She also used some great charts. I find that visuals help. I liked that Kristen Carter explained some of the issues without making me feel stupid. I really loved that she reminded you it was not a sprint but a marathon and that you should look at the big picture - that made it seem more doable. If you are having any health issues, I would highly recommend this book. It is a quick and easy read and gives you some great tools to help you find your answers.

Kristen Carter is spot on when she wrote this book. While all other books on diet and exercise tell you what you must do, in Lose Weight? Exercise More? I Don't Think So!, she treats her audience as her equal and has chosen to provide a road map that leads to a healthier lifestyle. There are no diet fads involved and no hardcore regimens to follow. She is aware that the road towards achieving great shape is paved with insurmountable difficulties that begin with a negative mindset about dieting and workouts. This book is an easy read of streamlined facts and ideas that help to enlighten readers about preconceived notions of excessive effort when it comes to diet and exercise. The best part (and it works) is that it reveals how all we need to do to offset such a negative attitude is to start with small changes.

Kristen Carter writes in a voice that reflects her sincere intentions in guiding her audience to achieve their ideal weight. She is not selling anything; rather, she writes about core reasons why most diet and exercise programs fail and she logically connects it with brain science to help you arrive at a decision about your choices and what you can do about it. Lose Weight? Exercise More? I Don't Think So! is not only refreshing but also enlightening. It gives you total control on how to approach weight loss without having to strain yourself. To anyone who has tried and failed in other diet and exercise programs, this book will serve as a wake-up call. It will trigger you to embark on a weight loss journey with renewed motivation that this time it will work!
