In Lulu and Pebbles: Pony Tales On The Farm by Reena Korde Pagnoni, Lulu dreamed of owning her very own unicorn. When the family moved onto a farm, she was sure her next birthday would make her dream come true. All she had to do was show her parents how responsible she was, and she did. Her birthday arrived and the surprise turned out to be something better than a unicorn – her very own pony from the local pony rescue farm. She loved the pony at first sight and named her Pebbles, but there was a rough start to bonding as the pony had been abandoned by her previous owners. In trying to create a loving bond with her new pony, Lulu avoided her best friend Emma. As Lulu and Pebbles bond, Lulu realizes that she needs to balance her life between responsibilities and fun times with friends.

Reena Korde Pagnoni’s early chapter book Lulu and Pebbles is a sweet story about a young girl and her pony, about friendships, bonding, responsibility and so much more. The story begins with Lulu waking up on her birthday, hopeful that her dream of owning a unicorn will come true. It follows her birthday surprises, which do not include a unicorn, but her very own pony, and the realization that some things don’t just happen because you want them to. Bonding and friendship require work and dedication – it’s another form of responsibility. Lulu has a lot to learn as she grows to love her new pony more each day. The simple language, descriptive dialogue, and charming illustrations help move the story along. The compassionate themes will remind readers of C.W. Anderson’s Billy and Blaze series and the strong bond that forms between a young person and their pony. A beautiful, tender story.
