Lying Close: A Jon Frederick novel by Frank F. Weber is a suspenseful novel with a strong appeal to fans of sleuth and romance novels. Jon Frederick is an investigator who is suddenly faced with one of the most disturbing cases in his career. Three crimes occurring within 30 miles from each other and in less than a year constitute an intriguing case: an apparent hunting accident, a break-in at a country home belonging to a couple, and the disappearance of a teenage runaway after calling for help. Is there anything linking these seemingly isolated incidents? As he works hard to solve these cases, Jon discovers that he is dealing with a dangerous criminal and that someone is leaking information about the cases. The unravelling of the mystery will take the characters through a ride filled with twists and surprises for readers.

The first thing that caught my attention as I started reading is Frank F. Weber’s deft handling of character and exquisite prose. From the protagonist, Jon, and his wife with whom he shares secrets, to Kaiko Kane, a fugitive who has a pending sexual assault charge, to Mia, Jada, and Clay, the author ensures that the brokenness of these characters is deeply and superbly written. They are so genuinely flawed that readers instantly want to follow them. The romance in the story is beautifully written as well. Frank F. Weber has a unique gift for writing scenes that are focused and taking readers into a physical setting that they can easily imagine. From the rural roads of the Minnesota counties to central Minnesota, the setting is written with fascinating detail. Lying Close: A Jon Frederick novel is intelligently plotted, engaging, and features characters that are unforgettable.
