Magic Teacher's Son: Book One of the Magicians' Gold Series by David Harten Watson is an epic young adult fantasy that would appeal most to a mixed audience of teens and preteens who enjoy magic-filled stories and do not mind some mild violence and limited mild swear words. Pran is the sixteen-year-old son and student of Master Gilamond. One might think that as the teacher's son he would have it easy, but one decision to sneak out at night with a friend to a circle of sorcery leads to him being thought of as the class snitch. Does young Pran have what it takes to clear his name while also fulfilling a prophecy and saving his kingdom?

Move over Harry Potter and Percy Jackson and make room for Pran in Magic Teacher's Son by David Harten Watson! This book might be intended for young adults, but as an adult I found it to be a very enjoyable read. I liked the distinction between magicians and sorcerers as normally fantasy books use the two words interchangeably, but this author made them into two different groups. The premise of the book reminded me a bit of the Harry Potter and Lightning Thief book series, yet I found this author’s take on magic to be much more imaginative with the different types of magic and the numerous different settings the characters visit during the attempted prophecy fulfillment. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to getting the chance to read the rest of the series.

In a world where sorcery is outlawed, Pran, son of the schoolmaster, sneaks out one night to attend the Circle of Sorcery. He is shocked by what he sees and does not participate much in the use of black magic. Little does he know that this one night of rebellion would have such far-reaching consequences. Read Magicians' Gold Series: Magic Teacher’s Son by David Harten Watson and immerse yourself in a fast-paced, magical world filled with adventure, betrayal, love, and friendship.

This is a fantastical, adventure that constantly kept me on my toes. I was drawn in by the summary but I stayed for the interesting plot, the otherworldly setting, and the distinctive characters. The summary of Magic Teacher’s Son is but the tip of the iceberg of what is about to come for Pran and his friends. Pran has been labeled and known as the ‘magic teacher’s son’ because of his father’s position as the master of his school. He is observed by his father more than others and this is a burden he must bear as a conjurer and Master Gilamond’s son. Little does he know that the role he plays in his world is bigger than just being the schoolmaster’s son.

This story is David Harten Watson’s labor of love and hard work. It is detailed and precise. Watson delights in sharing various interesting information and facts about the world he built. This shows me that the author has put a lot of thought and care into creating this world. The plot is enticing and complex. I found myself constantly curious about what happens next. I was enticed by Pran’s journey as he travels to Earth for the Kingdom of Eldor’s survival. His trials and struggles constantly put me on the edge of my seat and I silently cheered him on as I read. I can tell the author is proud of the world he has created and rightly so! Magic Teacher’s Son has great potential and I can’t wait to explore this world more in the next book!

Magic Teacher’s Son by David Harten Watson follows Pran, a teenage boy from Eldor, who after a sneaking out to a Circle of Sorcery is punished by none other than his father. Due to this, it is believed that Pran snitched on the boys' nightly activities which causes distrust among them. Before anything can be resolved, a prophecy is foretold stating that all the gold in their world will disappear. Gold is used to fuel their magic and, in the midst of war, the sorcerers cannot function without it. Pran must set off to Earth with three companions to find gold and end the war.

Magic Teacher’s Son by David Harten Watson is an interesting novel that grabs your attention from the get-go. Watson’s detailed world-building makes it so easy to imagine every detail of this fantastic and magical world. Coupled with interesting characters and a rich plot, Magic Teacher’s Son is definitely a must-read novel. I loved the way magic is used by utilizing a resource, especially where white magic uses gold and silver whereas black magic uses blood and bone. Details like this make a book enjoyable. The book is clearly aimed at adolescent readers and I think it definitely hit its mark; however, it can easily be enjoyed by any fantasy fan. This book is geared toward a male audience and I would have liked to see more female characters in the plot. However, I did thoroughly enjoy reading this book and would definitely recommend it.

Magic Teacher's Son by David Harten Watson is Book One of the Magicians' Gold Series. Pran is just 16 when he sneaks out of his house at night to experiment in sorcery with his friends. Little does he know that his dabbling is about to set off a chain of events that will change life as he knows it forever. Pran’s father is the magic school’s headmaster and is unhappy to learn of the experiments. The punishment Pran receives is hurtful – everyone now thinks he snitched on them. Pran needs to win his friends back and convince them he didn’t snitch but, before he can, he learns of a prophecy. Eldor’s Magicians need gold to hold back an invasion but it will disappear unless Pran can replace it. If he can’t, the Kingdom is doomed. Pran sets off on his quest with three friends but finding those friends will prove harder than he ever thought. Can he succeed in his quest to save his Kingdom? And will his friends and classmates believe him enough to stand by him?

Magic Teacher’s Son by David Harten Watson is the start of what feels like a promising new YA series. But this is more than just another story of magical battles to save a kingdom. It’s a story that deals with some complex issues facing teens all over the world – trust, betrayal, bullying, and forgiveness, to name just a few – and they are all dealt with sensitively while maintaining the premise of the story. This is a tale of intrigue with a great cast of characters that develops and grows as you read and it will grab you from the first page. It is written in easy-to-understand language, descriptive enough to make you feel you are in the story but allowing you to observe the characters from the outside. It has plenty of action and is an entertaining and fun read, a great introduction to what I hope is a long-lasting series.

Magic Teacher's Son by David Harten Watson is book one in the Magicians' Gold series. It's not always been easy being the teacher's son at a magic school so when the opportunity to break a few rules comes along, Pran jumps at the chance. Sneaking out after his parents go to bed is simple enough with a Silence spell but checking out the circle of sorcery could prove to be a greater risk when the spells being performed are dark. This decision sets into motion a series of events that introduces Pran to a new student, sparks betrayal from someone close to him, and uncovers the identity of a spy. When rumors circulate that Pran is the reason a student is kicked out, things aren't looking good for his reputation. Then he's given a mission that will take him to a place with horseless carriages where he'll experience first love and confront a prophecy in his search for gold.

Step into this magical world where magicians and sorcerers come to life on a journey with spies, friendship, and sorcery. The concept of white magic vs black magic is at the heart of Pran's journey as he's caught between the two with choices to make. Top-notch humor is bountiful throughout with Earth regarded as a mysterious other world viewed through a lens of a fantasy place. David Harten Watson sets up Earth as the fantasy world for these magic practicing characters which is a clever usage of humor that flips the script by sending a magical inhabitant into our real world. Pran's various friendships come with surprises, adventure, betrayal, and choices. The uncovering of a spy and a spell that isn't supposed to exist are just two of the surprises that accompany Pran on an unexpected adventure. One of the most repeated themes is that girls can't do magic, which is from the perspective of these teenage boys, so Pran's journey to Earth flips this idea in the satisfying meeting with Vitina. The lovely introduction of this world sets the stage for more adventures as Magic Teacher's Son is a fun foray into conspiracy, betrayal, first love, friendship, spies, sorcery, and a mysterious world with horseless carriages.
