Doctor Stacey Rose is moving to escape the guilt she feels. In Tayla Jean Grossberg’s Men of Treachery, constant flashbacks of her childhood plague Stacey. Once she moves into her new house, Stacey eats dinner at an Italian restaurant where she meets the detestable Zackary Hayes. On a scorching afternoon, Stacey is in a wreck after a tire blows out on her car. She walks several miles to a repair shop, where Roland Lowe offers to help her. He changes the tire, but refuses Stacey’s insistence on paying for the service. He relents to allowing her to buy him a drink at a local pub. Roland and Stacey cross paths again when she finds him shot in the back. Zackary appears at the hospital, and Stacey learns that Roland has not been honest with her from the start.

Tayla Jean Grossberg intertwines the elements of post-traumatic stress disorder, gun smuggling gangs, and romance in this intense story. Since Stacey had scars from her childhood, I understand her hesitation to show her body. I had difficulty understanding why she had an aversion to friendship because I would think it would ease the loneliness she feels. Roland seems torn by the camaraderie he shares with Zackary and his official role as an FBI agent. I cannot imagine killing people and committing crimes for over four years and not falling apart inside. Suspense builds at an intense pace. There are no dull moments in the story, and I couldn’t tear myself away from this book. The descriptive details of each moment made the story feel realistic. Readers who enjoy slow burn romance stories filled with danger will like Men of Treachery.
