Mind of a Madman is the fourth book in the Neuphobes series by Thomas Zman and is a fascinating psychological and military thriller with strong hints of science fiction. Meet Steve Coleman, the man who can’t remember his past. All he remembers is just black nothingness, except for that night when it was pouring with rain and he found himself walking along a desert highway. He is a man on the brink of insanity, struggling to uncover his past. A man who is driven, Steve Coleman sets out in the dead of night to find his errant daughter, Sandy, against the wishes of his wife, Jean. In a style that features a powerful stream of consciousness, the narrator pulls the reader into the disturbed mind of the protagonist.

I just became a fan of this author and have to read all the books in this series. I was pulled into the story from the very first page. A man waking up in the middle of the night and determined to drive a very long distance in search of his daughter is a strong premise. But it builds up with the exploration of the psyche of the protagonist. Mind of a Madman is told in an absorbing first-person narrative, and in spite of the grim nature of the experience of the protagonist, the story is rendered more enjoyable by the crisp prose and the deft use of humor. The author has a unique gift for character and I loved the different layers with which the personality of Steve Coleman is developed. Mind of a Madman by Thomas Zman is a page-turner, deftly written, and full of entertaining potential. A must-read for fans of psychological thrillers.
