Montana Darling is the story of Mia, who has lost her husband to a 20-something barista, her breasts to cancer, and her job as a hard-nosed prosecutor. After all that loss, what’s a girl to do but pack up her kids and her things and move back home to Marietta, Montana. The first item on her ‘get my life in order’ list is to build a home on an empty plot of land she received in her divorce. But Ryker Bensen has also come home to Marietta to claim land left to him by his father, the same land Mia claims is hers. Although complete opposites, Debra Salonen shows us that Ryker and Mia aren’t all that different. They simply put on different faces to hide their grief and fear from the rest of the world.

Ryker and Mia have both experienced loss and that is part of what makes Montana Darling such an interesting read. While Ryker pretty much shut down, Mia had no choice but to forge ahead and make different, smarter, better choices for the future. While it is the land dispute that brings these characters together, the story is about Montana and life and starting over after everything has gone to pieces. Debra Salonen was able to handle these issues without making this story maudlin. I loved how they were able to help each other in the aftermath of such devastation, while also being rather reluctant to help themselves. Mia was a fantastic heroine; she was strong and tough and refused to let anyone take advantage of her again. It was that feistiness that allowed Ryker to see the real her, and love her.
