Mr. Owl’s Classroom Presents: Bobby the Bobcat by Will Kelly introduces Mr. Owl, who loves teaching his third-grade students, including Bobby. The class is a mixture of twenty-six animals that range from large cats, birds, and alligators to elephants, rhinos, and hyenas. The animals each have different personalities and skills based on their species, which makes finding friends a bit difficult for Bobby, who used to spend time with the big cats. The cats found a new interest in sports that Bobby didn’t care to play and picked on him for not being able to do many push-ups. He tried to find other animals to play with but didn’t like to run, jump, or climb as the others did. Not having many friends, Bobby contented himself with reading. Will Bobby ever find friends that like the same things he does, or will he always be a loner because he wasn’t good at many sports?

The illustrations in Mr. Owl’s Classroom Presents by Will Kelly are beautiful images that kids will love as they follow along with Bobby and the other animals in the third-grade class. I loved how Bobby was content to read on his own rather than injure himself or others by participating in a sport he didn’t like. This book will encourage kids to be happy with themselves, to know their limits, and not to judge others by stereotyping them. I recommend this tale to young children and hope that Kelly adds more stories from Mr. Owl’s classroom that will teach kids valuable life lessons.
