Nala the kitten always dreamed of catching her first mouse. She was finally old enough to go out there and catch one herself after listening to the other cats bragging about catching the mice in the neighborhood for a long time. Nala finished eating quickly and she practiced her hiss, her pounce, and swiping with her paw before heading out. She went to the woodsy area behind her house and met up with her friends, Whiskers and Buttons. She proudly told them she was going to catch her first mouse, and they asked her to stick with them. Nala went with Whiskers and Buttons deep into the woods and though she knew she was far from home, Nala thought it would be worth it if she caught her first mouse.

Nala's Backyard Adventures: Nala Stands Tall by Despena Zouzas is a wonderful story that stresses the importance of doing what is right instead of doing what is usual. Maria Katinas breathes life into the story and the characters with her wonderful illustrations and makes it tangible to children. It is a good story to encourage youngsters to stand for what they believe in instead of following others, just like Nala decided to do when it came to letting the mouse go back to her family. Tutors and parents will find it a good storybook to use for read-aloud sessions because of the beautiful message for young readers.
